When left-hander Oliver Kern exited Half Moon Bay’s second-round game in the District 52 Little League All-Stars Intermediates baseball tournament, he made a serious sacrifice.

Kern was in the midst of no-hitter in HMB’s eventual 11-1 mercy-rule win over Redwood City, but after four innings of work turned the ball over to relief pitcher Aiden Keates. It was a tactical decision. With the game being played Sunday, Kern wanted to stay under 65 pitches so he’d be available after three days’ rest to start Thursday’s championship game.
