Serra’s Jaden Green is going to have a busy day Saturday as the senior is participating in four Central Coast Section track and field finals. Additionally, a couple dozen other San Mateo County athletes have qualified for the section championships at Gilroy High School Saturday.
Field events begin at 3 p.m., track events at 4:45 p.m.
Green has qualified in three running events — the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay — and the long jump and has an excellent chance to finish in the top-6 and earn a podium spot and a possible top-3 and a slot in the CIF State Meet trials.
Green comes into the 100 with the third-fastest qualifying time of 11.10. But he has the second-fastest time in CCS this season with a 10.58. Los Altos’ Nathaniel Guillory came out of nowhere, really, to post the fastest qualifying time of 10.88, a new personal record for the senior. His time of 11.04, which won the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League title, was just the sixth-fastest qualifying time going into the CCS trials.
Similiarly, Guillory flew to the fastest time in the 200, running a 21.18. Again, he came into the trials with the sixth-fastest qualifying time. But Guillory has the fastest time in CCS this season, posting a 21.30 at the CCS Top 8 Meet in April.
Green qualified for fifth with a 21.84, which is fourth-best in the CCS this season.
The Serra’s sprinters other best chance to move on to state is in the 4x100, where he teamed with Christopher Yoon, Jeovanni Henley, Jusiah Vinson to qualify third, cruising in with a 42.27.
There should be more left in the tank for the Padres, as they ran a CCS-best 41.77 to win the West Catholic Athletic League title two weeks ago.
Valley Christian is the leading qualifier, posting a time of 41.86. The Warriors finished second to Serra at the WCAL championships.
Yoon and Henley also qualified for the CCS finals as individuals. Yoon qualified 11th in the long jump — Green is eighth in the long jump. Yoon also qualified seventh in the 300 hurdles.
Henley, a freshman, qualified second in the 400.
The 3,200 has been a specialty of county runners this season, as a total of seven runners from six different schools grabbed one of 24 spots in the finals — 12 girls, 12 boys.
On the girls’ side, Crystal sophomore Anna Salter has the fastest time in CCS this season, having run a 10:39.96 at the Aracadia Invitational in April. She ran a 11:18.48 to win the WBAL championship and qualified for the final in third with an 11:14.83.
Joining her is Mills’ Jackie Pan, who ran an 11:16.51. Burlingame’s Victoria Kolmsee, a junior, posted an 11:26.23 to make the final, as did Sacred Heart Prep’s Sophie Chen with a time of 11:17.16.
Palo Alto junior Kinga Czajkowska had the fastest qualifying time of 11:05.29, but has the eighth-fastest time in CCS this season with a 10:58.55.
On the boys’ side, Menlo junior Landon Pretre is one of the favorites to claim a CCS championship. He qualified second with a time of 9:27.11, with Palo Alto’s Grant Morganfeld taking the top time of 9:14.03.
Pretre and Morganfeld have the two fastest times in CCS this season. Morganfeld’s time of 8:50.95 is more than two seconds behind Pretre’s best of 8:48.11 this season, which is seventh-fastest in the state this season.
Pretre’s teammate, freshman Henry Hauser, qualified for the final, as did Nueva School’s Ryan Fitzpatrick.
