The San Francisco City Golf Championships had some San Mateo County flavor to it over the weekend, especially on the women’s side.
Menlo School junior Gianna Inguagiato captured the Julie Inkster Flight Match Play championship, while former San Mateo High and Cañada standout Aman Sangha made it to match-play finals of the Championship Match Play bracket at the event held at Harding Park.
Inguagiato qualified sixth for the Inkster Match Play tournament following an 18-hole round of 83, which placed her 22nd of 49 players who started.
That sent her into the match-play portion of the tournament, where players go head to head and play to win holes instead of posting the lowest strokes score. In the first round, Inguagiato, the sixth seed, drew another familiar name to PAL golf fans — Carlmont’s Viveka Kurup, who is the reining Daily Journal Girls’ Golfer of the Year.
Kurup entered match play following a qualifying round of 84, good for 27th place and was seeded No. 11.
The two were tied after 18 holes, but it was Inguagiato who advanced to the quarterfinals by winning the first playoff hole.
Inguagiato had a much easier time in the second round, winning when she led by four holes with three left to play. She was even better in the semifinals, cruising to a 5 and 4 victory to advance to the championship match.
This time, she needed three playoff holes before finally beating fifth-seeded Charlotte Ryoo of Pleasanton on the 21st hole. Inguagiato stuffed a 5-iron from 175 yards out to 2 feet and then made a birdie putt to capture the title.
If you thought three extra playoff holes was nerve-racking, how about 20 playoff holes? That’s how many it took for Danielle Suh, Dougherty Valley High School-San Ramon senior, to beat Sangha, a former three-time PAL champion, in the Women’s Championship match-play finals.
Sangha qualified for the top women’s bracket as the No. 3 seed following a qualifying round of 4-over 76. Sangha comfortably won her match-play opener, 5 and 3. She got past Gia Feliciano in the second round before grinding out a 19-hole win in the semifinals to meet Suh in the championship match.
Sangha and Suh were tied after 18 holes and then remained tied for the next 19. That’s another whole round of golf and the beginning of a third.
It was Sangha’s second straight runner-up finish in the tournament, which began in 1958.
If the Central Coast Section ever wanted to put together a softball tournament comprised of a league’s coaches, I’d make the PAL the odds-on favorite to win the championship.
Four PAL Bay Division teams — Half Moon Bay, Hillsdale, San Mateo and Woodside — are led by coaches who excelled during their playing days on the Peninsula.
Alexa Daines (Woodside coach, 2008 Carlmont grad) and Alyssa Jepsen (San Mateo coach, 2008 Notre Dame-Belmont grad) got the ball rolling by taking over programs beginning the 2017 season. Kelly McDonald (Hillsdale coach, 2009 Notre Dame-Belmont grad) joined the PAL coaching ranks this season, as did Callie Pacheco-Barkley, a 2008 Half Moon Bay grad, who was an assistant with her alma mater for the 2016 season before taking over the head coaching duties this season.
All experienced nothing but success as players. Between the four of them, their high school team won four league titles, three CCS championships and three other finals appearances.
A pair of soccer teams from San Mateo AYSO finished third in the AYSO Western States Championships.
The San Mateo girls’ U12 and U14 Fall Select teams represented Area 2 and competed against the top AYSO squads from Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
In the U12 third-place game, Reina Younes bagged a pair of goals and Felicity Corti netted a third as San Mateo beat Camarillo 3-2.
In U14 third-place match saw San Mateo’s Kaya Po’oi score twice, while Jasmine Barrameda and Jessi Cerna scored a goal apiece in a 4-1 win over Carpenteria.
