WATSONVILLE — Two Peninsula Athletic League wrestlers were crowned champions at the Central Coast Section Masters Finals Saturday at Watsonville High School.
Lauren Aguilar claimed the girls’ 120-pound title, becoming the first wrestler in Burlingame history to earn a CCS championship. Sophia Darer secured the girls’ 110s crown, the first CCS title for Terra Nova since 2018.
Both grapplers qualified for the CIF State Wrestling Championships, opening Thursday at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield. The top three placers in each weight class earned bids to the state tournament.
Aguilar earned an 8-3 decision over Gilroy’s Jocelyn Mendoza in the 120s finals. The Burlingame junior entered the third period tied 3-3 but scored an escape point before executing a head and arm throw to score a takedown near the end of the period to clinch it. Two Panthers earned bids to the state tournament, with junior Andrew Jarrett taking third place in the boys’ 190s bracket.

Darer recorded a 10-5 decision over Willow Glen’s Casey Azus in the 110s finals. The Terra Nova sophomore used an outside single and an outside trip to score takedowns. This was Darer’s first individual tournament championship of the year. She settled for second place at the PAL League Finals at her home gym Feb. 3, losing in the finals on a technical violation. Her best tournament result in limited regular season varsity action was a third-place finish at the MidCals Classic Jan. 20.

Serra junior Preston Dixon also reached the finals, taking second place in the boys’ 215s bracket. Dixon was defeated by Gilroy’s Jose Guerrero via third-period pin.
