Gen Flieder, Mercy-Burlingame girls’ soccer. The senior goalkeeper ran her shutout streak to 10 straight games with wins over Notre Dame-SJ and Pinewood. She has not allowed a goal in 800 minutes and has allowed a total of 10 goals through 17 games.
Riley Woodson, Menlo boys’ basketball. Menlo was gunning for its second straight 20-win season in 2017-18 and got there in a hurry, reaching the plateau in its 21st game last Tuesday in a 65-40 win at Harker-San Jose. Woodson turned in his best-ever varsity scoring performance, totaling a career-high 27 points while shooting 10 of 12 from the field, including the first career 3-pointer for the 6-7 center.
Carly McLanahan, Menlo-Atherton girls’ basketball. The senior combo guard, after being held to just nine points in the Bears’ first league loss in 42 games, dropped 20 points in a win over Woodside, draining six 3-pointers in the process.
Sam Treanor, Half Moon Bay boys’ basketball. The senior point guard went off in a pair of Cougar wins last week. He scored 21 in a win over Westmoor to open the week, knocking down four 3-pointers along the way. He also dished out seven assists and came up with five steals. He then capped the week with 22 points and nine assists in an 81-point outburst as the Cougars routed Terra Nova.
Jerlene Miller, South City girls’ basketball. The senior captain was a double-double machine for the Warriors last week. The 5-8 post had 16 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over Terra Nova, and went for 19 and 14 against El Camino.
Josh Milch, Terra Nova boys’ basketball. The 6-4 senior wing eclipsed the 500-point career mark with 12 points in a win over South City.
Yara Gomez-Zavala, Menlo-Atherton girls’ soccer. The senior midfielder has been a thorn in the side of Burlingame this season. Scoring just three goals on the year, Gomez-Zavala has scored two of them against Burlingame, including one goal along with an assist in the Bears’ 2-0 win over the Panthers last Tuesday. Reigning league champ M-A earned two big wins last week to solidify its first-place standing in the PAL Bay Division with two games to go.
Fernando Diaz-Marquez, Half Moon Bay boys’ wrestling. The freshman has been working is way into the dominant Cougars lineup, moving up from the junior-varsity team to compete in varsity dual meets. Diaz-Marquez finished off a perfect 6-0 varsity record in last Thursday’s regular-season finale against Burlingame — as HMB capped its fifth straight PAL Bay Division title — earning the victory in the opening 108-pound match, this despite weighing in at 94 pounds.
Nathan Chan, Alma Heights Christian boys’ basketball. Extending their Private School Athletic League winning streak to 64 games last Friday, the Alma Heights Eagles had to earn this one with a dramatic 57-55 win over Summit Shasta. Alma Heights trailed 55-51 with 30 seconds remaining, but rallied behind its patented pressure defense and six points from Chan to overtake Summit. The senior guard, who totaled 17 points on the night, stoked the comeback scoring an and-1 with 16 seconds to go. After the Eagles’ full-court press caused a turnover, they went back to Chan who called a clear-out and beat his defender to the hoop for a power lay-up to give Alma Heights a 56-55 lead with five second left. After the Eagles’ defense caused Summit to dribble out of bounds for another turnover, Chan was quickly fouled on the ensuing inbound with one second remaining and hit a free throw before intentionally missing the second to run out the clock. And, oh yeah, the thrilling victory clinched the outright title for Alma Heights, marking the team’s sixth straight PSAL North Division championship.
Rodney Lawrence, Jefferson boys’ basketball. The 6-6 senior center has posted a string of games with 20-plus points in recent weeks and kept it going in Jefferson’s 68-43 win over rival Westmoor last Friday. Lawrence went for 22 points, including eight as the Grizzlies outscored the Rams 26-3 in the second quarter. The career program leader in rebounds and blocked shots, he also added seven boards and three blocks.
