Nicole Borg was named as the College of San Mateo's new softball coach, the school announced Tuesday.
Borg takes over for Tom Martinez, who recently stepped down after 30 years coaching the Bulldogs' softball team.
Borg, who had served as an assistant coach under Martinez the past two seasons, graduated from Capuchino High in 1998, where she starred in softball and basketball. She pitched for the Lady Bulldogs from 1998 to 2000, earning All American honors and a softball scholarship to University of Tennessee, where she graduated with a degree in sports management.
After coaching with the Lady Vols staff for a year, she returned to CSM.
She'll have big shoes to fill. In 30 years of coaching at CSM, Martinez served as football, women's basketball and softball coach - some years all three sports at the same time. In that time, he won over 1,400 games, including over 800 in softball alone.
Gary Dilley, dean of physical education and athletics, is entering his 18th season with the school. When he sat down to examine Martinez's records, he was astonished. Dilley said when Martinez coached at least two sports, he averaged 50 wins a year. From 1976 to 1998 as coach of the Lady Bulldogs basketball team, he was in the playoffs every year and finished his basketball coaching career by winning over 80 percent of his games.
"I knew he was an outstanding coach, but I had no idea about his records," Dilley said. "Tom Martinez is a coach for all sports. He's an expert in football, basketball and softball.
"If we asked him to be the badminton coach, he'd figure out a way to be the best at it."
Dilley said Borg was hired as an assistant coach with the understanding that she would take over the head coaching spot when Martinez stepped down.
"Tom spent a lot of time with her over the past couple years, mentoring her," Dilley said.
