Editor,
Every time I read about one of state Sen. Scott Wiener’s proposals I ask myself, “How did this guy get elected?”
He throws out bills like hand grenades with no understanding of the collateral damage that it will cause. His latest bill would put speed governors on all new cars sold in California. Does he think that will turn bad drivers into good ones — that it will make drivers stop texting or drinking? Does he know that there are studies that show drivers driving too slow on highways cause more accidents than those driving too fast?
The collateral damage with this bill would be that it would curtail the sale of high end cars whose sales tax is an important source of income for many cities. Folks would just go to other states to buy their cars. It would also create a cottage industry for mechanics to remove the governors.
If this guy really wants to make roads safer, start funding driver’s ed programs in schools.

Scott Wiener's bill is impractical. A number of drivers would just deactivate the device and then you'd have a larger differential in car speeds that'd cause more accidents. Eventually autonomous driving cars will eliminate almost all auto accidents.
