Editor,
This is in regards to Jack Kirkpatrick’s letter printed April 3, 2009, "The influence of unions.” His letter has made me change my unconditional support of unions.
In the past I have supported unions. I was a due paying union member. I didn’t feel right about my union dues going to support people and causes that worked against my community and religious beliefs. Union support of abortion, gay marriage, and anti anything Republican got me to think what did those issues have to do with being a union member? I fooled myself into thinking that was part of doing business. But, as I got older I realized what the union supported in many instances was in contrast to my beliefs.
I am pro-life, pro-legal immigration, and pro-secret ballot in elections, but I am not going to force anyone to think as I do. I am also not going to donate money to a group that promotes abortions, illegal alien workers or take away an individual’s conscious and independent thinking in what is right for that person and their family; but, I see that’s exactly what the unions are doing.
In Kirkpatrick’s letter he makes a brilliant point. Many unions have illegal immigrants in their membership. That hurts legal workers and is in direct opposition to what most unions say they stand for. Unions don’t support E-Verify documentation policy but promote card check at the cost of the secret ballot. It turns out that the unions had a lot to do with the 12-20 million illegal workers in the U.S. If unions hurt legal workers by allowing or even aiding illegal alien workers then I must rethink my unconditional support. I didn’t go to the Flower and Garden show because I read about the labor dispute. I believe we vote with our actions not just our words, by giving or withdrawing support. I can’t support E-Verify.
