A quick shout out to Capt. William Fogarty who is running both the Maguire and Maple Street jails at a time of critical understaffing, seriously crashed morale due to the turmoil at the top of the Sheriff’s Office, and recently an out-of-service elevator that has resulted in the cancellation of family visits at Maguire Jail. I can only imagine how stressful it is for jail staff to be working in this toxic work environment, making it even harder to care for the incarcerated population.
On Oct. 1, Capt. Fogarty came to the Independent Citizen Advisory Commission on the Sheriff’s Office and offered much appreciated transparency on the status of the repairs to the Maguire jail elevator —which has been broken since June — as well as what the jail has done to improve access to religious services. This was in direct response to requests from faith providers and the community. Many thanks to Capt. Fogarty and jail staff for these efforts, however, we all know there is more work to do. This is a great start to the transparency that the community has been seeking from the Sheriff’s Office.
