In these final days before November 7 our eyes and ears are filled to over-flowing with the polling results of the Bush/Gore presidential race. Somehow we should try to mentally shut off the news about the polls and quietly THINK for a moment:
Think Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Think the Great Depression of the 1930s. Remember how FDR and his New Deal dealt with it. Think of what Republican presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover did with the economy of the 1920s. Then remember what FDR miraculously accomplished to prevent the Republican created catastrophe from completely sinking the American people.
Take time to look back at the results of the New Deal's courageous period of trial and error that ultimately created the safety network that we now threaten to quietly whittle away and nibble away at this great safety network originally created by FDR and the Democratic New Deal.
Yes, this is now the threat from Bush, the "compassionate conservative," and his VP candidate Cheney, the bare-knuckle conservative. Talk to the older generation who remember vividly how the Democratic New Deal saved their parents' homes, restored a bit of income, save small businesses and put into place the Social Security system.

The skills of protecting our security and environment did not originate with the Republican Party. The Democratic Party has put in many more years of work honing our security network than the Republicans have. The last Republican President who came close to possessing the skills for protecting the environment was Theodore Roosevelt who served from 1901 to 1908, and he was thoroughly detested by the conservatives in his own party.
Al Gore, like his father, who was a Senator before him, came out of the Democratic Party tradition of politicians who protect the consumer and modest income groups.
