Recently, the California Apartment Association (CAA) spent over $15,000 on mailers attacking Redwood City Council candidate Diana Reddy, spotlighting her endorsement by local chapters of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in a desperate attempt to scare off voters. As a leader writing on behalf of those chapters, I want the public to know what we stand for, and why we support Reddy.
Peninsula and Silicon Valley DSA are volunteer-run, grassroots organizations. Like Reddy, we fight for economic and social justice, including higher wages, better health care and tenant protections. Our members have joined workers on picket lines at Marriott and Pullman hotels in San Jose and Redwood City; talked to neighbors about the benefits of “Medicare for all” single-payer health care; and fought CAA’s efforts to repeal rent control in Mountain View. We care about our community and neighbors, which is why we organize and share in each other’s struggles.
Diana Reddy will push to protect renters from eviction and abuse from profit-obsessed landlords. That’s not “hurting homeowners” — it’s protecting our neighbors. Reddy will push billion-dollar corporations to pay more taxes. That’s not “destroying jobs” — it’s ensuring the richest corporations pay their fair share. We support Reddy not because she agrees with us on everything (indeed, she doesn’t agree about abolishing capitalism), but because she’s a genuine community voice. She’s a longtime activist who doesn’t take donations from corporate interests. She’s the only candidate in this race who supports rent control. She will use her seat to fight for ordinary people. Vote Reddy.
Thank you Chet- your letter does an excellent job in pointing out all the reasons voters should never vote for Dianna Reddy. I appreciate the information.
Reddy is a proponent of rent control and just cause eviction as exemplified in your letter. While you now spend your time campaigning for Ms. Reddy let the rest of us use our time to reflect on the campaign she funded in 2016 to destroy private property rights via the failed Measure R in Burlingame in which the voters of the City soundly defeated your ideals and that of Ms. Reddy, a major backer of it.
Curious that Ms. Reddy is pushing a policy such as rent control when the city is facing huge service cuts if the voters don't approve the sales tax measure on tommorrow's ballot. Rent control will only amplify the city's financial problems by slowing the growth of property taxes, Redwood City's single largest revenue source. If she's elected will we see another tax increase on the ballot to make up for the foregone property taxes? Rent control is not the solution to the high cost of housing in this area. Hopefully, Redwood City voters will understand this and not vote Ms. Reddy into office.
