Editor,

Why is it that the same people always get all the positions? Today, I read that David Canepa was sworn into the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board of Directors. He is also president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. The article in the Daily Journal stated that he is also on other boards and commissions, like the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance and the San Mateo County Transit District. Earlier this week, there was an article about Jackie Speier joining the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. Since January, she has been on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Surraco. The bigger question is whether we need all of these boards and commissions. Not only that, don’t members of these boards and commissions receive financial compensation as members? And if so, why would these folks work to craft any solutions? Tis better to meet early and often for as long as possible else it’ll potentially take away from their ongoing compensation. Perhaps that is why the same people always get all the positions – a “politician boy/girl” club, if you will. New people and new ideas means these folks will earn less money and a potential end to their board/commission.
