Regarding the July 29 column on the South City sign: Has Mr. Silverfarb ever asked anybody who actually lives in SSF what they think of the sign? I think he will find that there are still plenty of people there who know what the sign meant and still means.
I grew up in South City and my grandparents were residents from 1953 to 2003. My grandfather used to help paint the letters on the sign to keep them looking good. There are still residents today who take pride in the sign and the contributions South City has made to the Peninsula over the years.
Also, if you're embarrassed by the sign that's your problem. Take a poll, see what that turns up! Just make sure you do it realistically. Ask the people what they think of the "embarrassment." But ask old and young alike. And maybe other cities didn't "follow suit" because they were slow on the draw.
