Regarding the Jan. 12 guest perspective "Safeway's hard line." It sounds as though Mr. Lind, president of UFCW Local 428, is surprised about Safeway's hard line position regarding the current contract negotiations. Mr. Lind should have been reading the local newspapers regarding Safeway's ability to take a hard line. The residents of Burlingame are well aware of Safeway's ability to take a hard line.
Over the last eight years Safeway has taken a hard line on the proposed Safeway construction project. Had Safeway been flexible and open to differing view points there would probable have been a new Safeway store in Burlingame, for Mr. Lind's union members.
It appears as though Mr. Lind is asking for the communities support regarding the current contract issues. I, for one, will support your efforts to fight Safeway regarding their hard line position! I hope you will do the same when, we the residents of Burlingame are attempting to have Safeway be more flexible and open to reasonable alternatives, that differ from their "Big Box" store concept.
There are some interesting construction concepts being kicked around for a new multi-use facility that would incorporate Safeway as the anchor point. These current ideas would benefit all of the union trades, more so than the single "Big Box" store Safeway is so set on building.
