Editor,
San Mateo City Council might try to repeal the Measure Y building height limits that voters passed in November 2020. A repeal could be on the November 2024 ballot. They are seeking comments.
I suggest we conduct an unofficial public comment period. Presume the following item is on the ballot. How would you vote?
“Shall the Measure Y building height limits be repealed?”
Yes. Allow taller buildings in some or all parts of San Mateo.
No. Retain the existing height limits.
City Council discussed this in detail on March 6. They are looking for ways to squeeze additional affordable housing into San Mateo. The Daily Journal published a summary of it on March 9.
Video of the meeting is at www.cityofsanmateo.org. Click on “Public Meetings,” scroll down to “Archived Meetings” and look for March 6.
Clip this letter, mark your choice, and mail it to them. Also send your constructive comments or suggestions. Maybe you have an idea they have not considered. Please be candid but respectful. City Council, City of San Mateo, 330 W. 20th Ave., San Mateo, CA 94403 or send email to citycouncil@cityofsanmateo.org

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Daane. I imagine developers and building trade unions weren’t happy with the original vote so now they’re hoping their contributions into our political process effect a better return on investment by challenging Measure Y, over and over and over until they receive the result the special interests desire. It’s better to vote out the folks who continue putting up the height limit for vote.
