The San Mateo City Council would be well advised to cut the gas to each of their homes, go all electric, and thereby increase their perspective and credibility on forcing “decarbonization” for city residents (“San Mateo walks tightrope with decarbonization” in the Jan. 20-21 Daily Journal).
Our retrofit mini-split heat pump system cost $25,000 including rebates for our average-sized house. The result in energy savings is modest at best. If after councilmembers decarbonize they still want to proceed, they’ll find incentives more effective than demands.
Tom - sorry to hear that. Mini-split heat pumps are notoriously inefficient but cheap to install. They are really designed for supplemental heating and cooling not for whole house conditioning. The contractor and PCE should have mentioned that before you made the decision. I also hope you got a standby generator with the package.
