Any accident where a car strikes a bicyclist or pedestrian is bad (Daily Journal, March 15). These usually involve drivers who are either distracted or reckless, and tend to occur more often at crosswalks and intersections, especially if the driver is making a right turn, where they seemingly fail to look to the right prior to proceeding.
But as a driver and a pedestrian, I must call out the number of bike riders who fail to follow traffic laws, common courtesy and safety practices. Every day I see bikes blowing through stop signs and red lights without so much as slowing down. I see adults riding on sidewalks on streets where we have explicit lanes for them. I see bikes exceeding the speed limit on the Foster City levee and riding in the one-third of the pavement reserved for pedestrians.
Everybody — drivers and bicyclists — must try to do better. Follow the rules, be aware of your surroundings, and expect the person or vehicle next to you to do the unexpected, so you can be prepared.
