I thank letter writer Gina Miranda for her contribution to the immigration debate. Her vivid imagery of “bounty hunters descending on our communities,” paid per “scalp,” and government-sponsored home invasions is the kind of rhetoric that certainly moves the conversation.
Ironically, she may be doing more for immigration enforcement than she realizes. Faced with nonstop panic and exaggeration, hundreds of thousands of individuals have already chosen to self-deport in recent months. Fear, after all, can be quite the motivator.
If that’s the goal, then by all means — carry on, Gina. But let’s be clear: Public discourse should be rooted in facts. Otherwise, we’re just trading one lie for another and undermining any hope of real reform.
