Dr. Charles Andrew Evans Jr. (Drew) died peacefully in Redwood City, California Sunday, April 22, 2018. He was born in Harriman, Tennessee, in February 1942 to Charles A. Evans and Margaret Johnson Evans. He earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Cornell University, where he also rowed crew.
Drew mentored budding scientists in both academia and private industry in various capacities. Most significantly he founded Charles Evans & Associates which was recognized as the world leader in providing surface and thin film materials characterization. Drew had a passion for great food, art, French wine, traveling to tropical locations and sailing. He is survived by his son Christopher A. Evans of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and daughter Amy (David La Cedra) Evans of San Carlos, California.
A celebration of Drew’s incredible life and legacy will be held Lucie Stern Community Center in Palo Alto, California, noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 16. In lieu of flowers, donations to Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California, can be made in Drew’s name.
