SAN JOSE — Two more Northern California counties have moved to ban retail stores from giving out plastic bags and have them charge for paper bags.
Santa Clara County supervisors voted Tuesday to prohibit the distribution of the bags during checkout at retail stores in unincorporated areas. Shoppers would be able to buy 100 percent recyclable paper bags under the ordinance that goes for a final vote in October.
Also Tuesday, Santa Cruz County supervisors voted to move ahead with a similar ordinance, though implementation is pending an environmental review.
San Francisco and Palo Alto already have similar plastic bag bans, and a ban in San Jose is expected to go into effect in January. Statewide legislation also is being considered.
Opponents argue people reuse plastic bags as trash liners or to scoop up pet waste.
