OAKLAND — Oakland police have identified a woman killed when gunmen opened fire on a group of people attending an early morning vigil for a homicide victim.
Officer Jeff Thomason said 19-year-old Rachael Green died Wednesday after she and five others were struck in the parking lot of a west Oakland housing complex around midnight.
Thomason said the shooting happened only minutes after a patrol officer conducted a security check of the area and near where the Oakland police union held a news conference on Monday in lieu of possible officer layoffs.
Sgt. Jim Rullamas said two gunmen fired dozens of shots into the crowd of about 30 people without warning. The other victims ranged in age from 14 to 18. Their names have not been released.
Only two of the victims — a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy — remain hospitalized after undergoing surgery.
Both are expected to survive.
