OAKLAND — The son of a former police detective has been convicted of murdering a 17-year-old boy while drunk at an Oakland house party.
An Alameda County jury found 21-year-old Dwayne Stancill guilty Wednesday of second-degree murder and intentional discharge of a firearm.
Stancill shot Greg Ballard Jr., a football player at San Leandro High School, in the stomach on Oct. 13, 2007.
Stancill, whose father is a former San Leandro detective, was later arrested after police identified him through a photo on a MySpace page belonging to a gang he allegedly belonged to. He admitted to the shooting the teenager without provocation.
The defense had argued that Stancill shouldn’t be convicted of first-degree murder because he was too drunk to plan the killing.
Stancill faces 40 years to life in prison when he’s sentenced April 9.
