AHMEDABAD, India (AP) — An Air India plane bound for London crashed in a residential area of Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff Thursday, sending a massive fireball into the sky and killing at least 240 people, officials said. One passenger who was thrown from the plane survived.

The death toll includes medical students who were in a college hostel when the plane hit the building, said Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer in the northwestern city.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah visited the only survivor of the Air India plane crash at a hospital in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Shah also met others who were injured in the crash.
