A 25-year-old Australian national allegedly attempted to smuggle 44 pounds of methamphetamine out of the country on Feb. 11, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Yasmine Vantongeren was charged with transportation of methamphetamine for purposes of sale and possession of methamphetamine, Wagstaffe said. She pleaded not guilty.
Vantongeren had entered the county Jan. 29 and visited Los Angeles before coming back to the San Francisco International Airport with the intent to fly back to Brisbane, Australia, on Feb. 11. But a flagged search of her checked bag allegedly uncovered the meth, Wagstaffe said.
She is now being held in custody without bail and faces up to nine years in state prison if found guilty. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 27.
