Stanbridge Academy, a private nonprofit school for students with learning disabilities in North Central San Mateo, is asking the city of San Mateo to expand its 80-student school into a house at an adjoining property.

If the proposal is approved, the two-unit house on the 8,429-square-foot property will be used as a library, classroom, office, teacher curriculum resource center and possibly housing for teachers or visiting parents, according to Associate Planner Lori Matsukuma. The house is potentially eligible for historic status but Matsukuma said school officials plan on maintaining the structure as is. The current school is 41,720 square feet.
