Carlmont three-peats as PAL Bay tennis champs
First-place Carlmont (12-0 PAL Bay, 15-2 overall) took care of business Thursday with a 4-3 victory at Aragon to clinch the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division girls’ tennis title outright.
Carlmont No. 3 doubles Siritha Sivaraman and Hayley Kwok finished out the day with a nail-biter, getting past Hayley Chong and Catie Wu in a super-tiebreaker 6-1, 3-6 10-8. No. 2 single Megan Bence, No. 4 single Amelie Du Chau, and No. 2 doubles Maya Kacholiya and Yahvi Shah all won in straight sets for the Lady Scots.
Aragon No. 1 Mia Lo got past Zoe Hendricks 6-4, 7-5, while No. 3 Shanay Biouk and No. 1 doubles Jessa Williams and Allison Newman also won for the Lady Dons in straight sets.
The loss drops Aragon into a second-place tie with Burlingame in the PAL Bay Division standings with two matches to go. Aragon holds the hammer against in the tie-breaker format, having split the season series against Burlingame with a 7-0 win and a 4-3 loss, giving Aragon more overall individual match wins in head-to-head play.
Second place in the PAL Bay Division is critical. With the second-, third-, and fourth-place teams in the Bay advancing the the PAL tournament — league champion Carlmont gets a bye through the tournament and earns an automatic bid to the Central Coast Section playoffs — the second-place team earns home-court advantage throughout.
“The girls are very happy,” Aragon head coach Dave Owdom said. “They want the season to continue, and I do too. We want to see how far we can get.”

Woodside 7, South San Francisco 0
The Wildcats (11-1 PAL Ocean, 12-1 overall) swept at South City to maintain a first-place tie in the PAL Ocean Division along with Hillsdale. No. 1 single Charly Moore led the was with a 6-2, 6-1 win; and No. 1 doubles Tatiana Berghold and Addie Weston won 6-0, 6-2.
Burlingame 7, Half Moon Bay 0
Third-place Burlingame (9-3 PAL Bay, 13-5 overall) dropped just four sets in singles play at Half Moon Bay (0-12, 0-14), as No. 1 Samantha Tom; No. 2 Evelyn Du; No. 3 Lyra Sheng; and No. 4 Caroline Rafferty all swept to victory.
Menlo 6, Sacred Heart Prep 1
Menlo swept doubles play in its rivalry match at Sacred Heart Prep, led by No. 1s Milla Budony and Sophia Jia with a 6-4, 7-6(2) win over Emma Singel and Sadie Harmssen (SHP) 6-4,7-6(2). No. 1 single Elise Chen also earned a win for Menlo, battling 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 past Charlotte Weber.

Avery Palmer-Sammons led the way with four goals as the Cougars (5-5 PAL Ocean, 5-5 overall) earned the win at San Mateo (4-6, 4-6). With the win, HMB snaps a two-game losing streak, and moves into a third-place tie with Mills and Notre Dame-Belmont in the PAL Ocean Division standings, with Mills falling to NDB.

Notre Dame-Belmont (5-5 PAL Ocean, 9-8 overall) moved into a three-way tie for third place in the PAL Ocean with a 6-3 win over Mills (5-5 PAL Ocean) at Aragon.
Burlingame (10-0 PAL Ocean) rolled to a 12-4 home win over Mercy-Burlingame (4-6). With the win, the first-place Panthers maintain a one-game lead over Hillsdale in the PAL Ocean standings.
Boys’ water polo
San Mateo 20, Half Moon Bay 0
The second-place Bearcats (7-1 PAL Ocean, 8-4 overall) remained a half game back in the PAL Ocean Division standings with a shutout at home of Half Moon Bay (2-6 PAL Ocean). Nicolai Asmar led the way with eight goals, two assists and two steals. San Mateo is slated to travel to first-place Aragon Oct. 28.
