A South San Francisco man who was found guilty by a jury of beating an older man to death at a bus stop in August 2019 was found competent by a court-appointed doctor and was sentenced to 35 years to life in prison, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
“It’s an outstanding sentence. I’m very pleased with what the court did,” Wagstaffe said. “Justice was done today in that sentence.”
Vincent Jesus Osegueda was previously transferred to a state mental hospital after his defense attorney declared doubt about his mental competency in 2020. He was restored to competency by the state hospital in March 2022, at which point he returned to the San Mateo County Jail. Despite further motions by his defense team that questioned his competency after his return, his competency was reaffirmed by a court doctor in the past month.
Osegueda beat the 62-year-old man to death at a bus stop near South Airport Boulevard and Linden Avenue in 2019 while the victim waited to go to work at the airport. Osegueda allegedly approached the victim, got into an altercation, wrestled him to the ground and proceeded to beat him to death. A passing bus driver and a nearby worker saw the altercation and called 911. Police arrived and found Osegueda trying to conceal the victim’s body near a fence 25 feet from the sidewalk by placing the body in ivy and trying to cover it with dried leaves. Osegueda had injuries to knuckles and hands, and he was arrested but declined to make a statement. There is no known motive for the attack, and the crime appears to be a random act of violence.
