While most of the nonprofit’s Peninsula locations are based in schools, it also has a few standalone facilities, including the South City location, which is the only one that serves the mid- to northern Peninsula area.
Across all 30 sites, the organization serves about 6,700 students, with 520 students being served in South City. Jennifer Obiaya, Peninsula Boys & Girls Club CEO, said the nonprofit provides a range of free programs, such as after-school classes, full-day summer camps, mental health services and career programs.
The existing facility, owned by the city, was constructed in 1961 and is in need of significant updates, according to a staff report. Currently, it serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade but plans to allocate one of the new buildings to high schoolers, increasing capacity to 300 students. Two of the demolished structures would be replaced with two-story buildings and accommodate more programming.
“There is an urgent need to rebuild this clubhouse for two main reasons,” Obiaya said. “One is building capacity. The current building only can serve 160 students, and we are constantly at capacity with waitlists. We can also only serve K-8 students. There is no ability to serve high school students.”
Obiaya added the building is “in bad shape.”
Councilmember Mark Nagales, along with other councilmembers, said he supported the plan.
“Just looking at these designs, it’s night and day. I cannot wait for this to happen,” Nagales said. “I’m a former club kid and now I’m a councilmember, and that’s because of the people of the Boys & Girls Club.”
Councilmember James Coleman, who said he also used to frequent the space, said he was looking forward to seeing the new updates.
“It’s great to see that we’re not just renovating the space, we’re doubling it, which is very exciting,” he said.
Programs will continue running during construction at 840 W. Orange Ave. Construction is anticipated to last about one year and three months.
