A 27-year-old teacher at a Redwood City church school was charged with statutory rape after prosecutors allege she had sex with a 16-year-old male student multiple times at the boy's home and on school property.
Joan Marie Sladky, of Redwood City, pleaded not guilty to four felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years younger than herself, one count of unlawful sexual penetration with a minor under 16 by a person over the age of 21, and one count of oral copulation with a minor. She did not waive her right to a speedy trial and returns to court Wednesday for a superior court review conference. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the evidence July 19.
Sladky was a high school Spanish teacher at taught at the private Redwood Baptist school, according to the District Attorney's Office. Authorities were alerted after Sladky confessed the relationship to her pastor who in turn contacted police.
School officials did not return calls for comment.
Redwood City police arrested Sladky early Wednesday morning on a $175,000 warrant issued last week. Judge Thomas Smith upheld the bail during her initial arraignment and she remains in custody
According to prosecutors, the sexual acts between Sladky and the boy occurred on four separate occasions between December 2003 and Jan. 31, 2004 at the boy's home or her home. Sladky's residence is located on the property containing both the church and school in unincorporated Redwood City.
Sladky is the second Redwood City teacher arrested this year on charges of having sex with an underage student. Rebecca Ann Boicelli, 34, pleaded no contest to one felony charge of unlawful sexual conduct after giving birth to a baby fathered by a former student. Boicelli and the victim, now 18, met in 2001 when he was a 14-year-old student at the Redwood City alternative school where she taught. She will be sentenced Aug. 19.
