School administrators say the naming of Mary Ann Johnson Field last spring was a good fit for San Mateo High School. Johnson was a long-time community activist and youth soccer organizer, and the school was pleased to receive $250,000 from her foundation for naming rights of the stadium.
Now the San Mateo Union High School District is considering offering naming rights for academic buildings and for a proposed remodel of the stadium at Mills High School, also for $250,000.
On Thursday night, the board will discuss the rule, which would put a price tag on many school buildings - the larger the building, the more it would cost, said Associate Superintendent Bob Arnold.
"You'd be surprised how many firms and foundations are interested," Arnold said.
The district recently accepted $200,000 from EA Sports to name a sports technology wing in Capuchino High School, and while the strategy earns needed money and honors former students, staff and community members, Arnold said the board is also careful not to overcommercialize.
"You wouldn't necessarily have the Pepsi Cola School or the Coke School," Arnold said.

"I think it's a really good policy and I think it helps donors who want to help the remembrance of someone who made a difference in the community, more than just a commercial."
In a separate matter, the district is applying for two state grants to replace the track and field at Mills High School and to finish installing new bleachers and field lighting for San Mateo High.
The new artificial turf and track will cost $1.5 million, the same as San Mateo, and would be essentially the same project, Arnold said.
The Board will meet 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28 at 789 E. Poplar Ave. in San Mateo.
