A San Mateo man is facing 11 years to life in prison on a charge of attempted premeditated murder after he allegedly attacked a woman with a 6-foot chain at the Capri Motel in Redwood City early Sunday morning, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Scott Thompson, 36, was arrested shortly after a woman reported being badly hurt at the Capri Motel at 2380 El Camino Real around 4:30 a.m. March 10. Redwood City police officers responding to the motel allegedly found blood all over the room where Thompson was staying and the woman with lacerations on her head, hands and feet, according to prosecutors.
The woman, who was conscious when police found her, allegedly told them she didn’t know Thompson when she saw him standing outside his room with a pipe and asked him for a cigarette. He said he had one and she allegedly followed him into the room, where he started beating her with a 6-foot-long metal chain, according to prosecutors.
The woman allegedly said she started screaming as loud as she could because she thought she was going to die and Thompson allegedly left the room. She was taken to Stanford Hospital and treated at the intensive care unit for injuries that were not life threatening, according to prosecutors and police.
Thompson was found some two blocks away from the motel on El Camino Real with blood stains on his hands and pants and allegedly told police he just beat a woman. Surveillance footage from the motel showed Thompson had been walking around the motel with the chain over his shoulder some two hours before the incident, according to prosecutors.
The county’s private defender program was appointed to Thompson’s case when he appeared in court Tuesday and he will next appear in court March 19 for appearance of a designated attorney and entry of plea, according to prosecutors.
Thompson remains in custody on no bail status, according to prosecutors.
