A San Mateo man has been charged with misdemeanor vandalism for allegedly carving several phrases onto a police patrol car; including his own name and initials, the 650 and 408 area codes and chivo — Spanish for billy goat — San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

The man, 27-year-old Erik Lara, was found by a police officer outside the Redwood City police substation at 5:20 a.m., Wagstaffe said. The knife allegedly used for the carvings was found nearby.

Released on his own recognizance? How many thousands of dollars will it cost to repair the vehicle? How about some public service time like painting over graffiti or picking up trash? How about some public humiliation like his photo published?
