With all the new construction and development planned for San Mateo even the high school will not be left out.
San Mateo high school will get a brand new gymnasium to replace its current one which was built in 1929. According to the Associate Superintendent of Business Services Bob Arnold the current gym is no longer usable. “It isn’t large enough for the entire school to attend [functions],” Arnold said. “[It] needs a lot of renovations, but they’ve been using it.”
The gym is being built in partnership with the city of San Mateo — the primary funders for the project.
The total project cost is $6.2 million, and the construction cost for the site is $5.2 million. The city’s recreation department is contributing $4.5 million and the district is receiving $1.1 million from the state.
“The school district is very fortunate to be able to partner up with the City,” Arnold said.
As a result of the funding from the city and the state, the district only has to cover the remaining costs: $800,000.
“We’ve had a number of successful partnerships with other cities for projects,” Arnold said. “We built a $2.8 million aquatic center at Burlingame High School, and the district only puts up $300,000, the rest was covered by the city and a private donor.

The San Mateo Union School District covers San Mateo, Foster City, Millbrae, San Bruno Park, and Hillsborough.
The new gym will be built on the school campus and will front on Delaware Street. The site was previously a student parking lot.
Work on the site has already begun and the site preparation is expected to be complete at the end of the month.
According to Arnold the district is currently out to bid on the site. “We will open bids in about two weeks,” Arnold said “We are going before the School Board on September 14th with a recommendation to award the contract to the lowest bidder.”
Since the gym is a public contract the lowest bidder who meets the criteria gets the contract.
The gym, which will include, a basketball court equipped for other indoor sports, a dance studio, and a weight room, it expected to be open for use in the fall of 2001.
The gym will be open to the public when the school is not using it and the recreation department will be organizing programs and classes for the public.
