A spike in COVID-19 cases pushed San Francisco and San Mateo counties into the state’s purple tier on Saturday, joining most of the region and California in rolling back non-essential indoor activities like fitness, worship, movie theaters and museums.

In San Mateo County, the health department reported an 85 percent spike in new COVID-19 cases from October to November. The county’s new adjusted case rate is 7.6 per 100,000 population, officials said Saturday.

Kathleen Kirkwood: It would be helpful if you report not just the adjusted cases/100k population but also the unadjusted cases/100k population of a 7-day average with a 7-day delay. The adjusted case rate of 7.6/100k is a fabricated number by the state; the real case rate is/was 15.2 which means there was a 7-day average of 122 positive cases/day/100k population 7-days ago. That is quite a bit more than 61/day; so the risk of exposure is twice as high as the adjusted case rate implies. Check the data on the state's covid19 page and the Excel spreadsheets. Hope this helps for future reports. Also there is a difference between COVID19 disease and coronavirus positive test cases! Thanks.

Correction: should state: a 7-day average of 122 positive cases/day/800k county population 7-days ago. I apologize for the misstatement.
