As one of the last cities in the county with an elected treasurer, San Carlos is looking to change that through Measure L on November ballots.

The measure looks to change the treasurer position from elected to appointed, in an effort to reflect the city’s complex finances and “catch up with the times,” Councilmember Ron Collins said.

I thought the goal was to remove the treasurer position, not change from an elected treasurer to an appointed treasurer. The result is virtually the same except the fox (city council) is now in charge of the henhouse (appointed treasurer). As for using the “only” qualifications as a reason, are we assuming that anyone with these minimal “only” qualifications will be hired? What happened to the vetting and interviewing processes? If the treasurer position will continue to exist, I’d recommend voting NO on Measure L.
