While SamTrans, the county’s public transit agency, continues its ongoing contract negotiations with one union, it has reached a three-year agreement with the Teamsters Union, which includes facility technicians, bus inspectors and transit instructors.
Members will see 4% raises in the first year and 3.5% increases in the second and third years. And, due to updated job classifications, employees will receive anywhere from 18% to 22% raises over the next three years, according to a SamTrans press release. The Teamsters’ previous contract ended at the end of last month.
The agreement comes at the same time the agency is trying to reach a resolution with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1574 — whose members include bus operators, some maintenance and utility workers and customer service representatives. Both parties plan to begin mediation soon. The original proposal by SamTrans would have resulted in an 18% pay increase over three years for bus operators, a 22% increase for maintenance and utility workers and an 11% raise for customer service representatives. But Ernie Solero, president of the ATU Local 1574, said it’s still much lower than other neighboring agencies, and issues with unpaid work breaks for first-year employees have also not been addressed.
About one-third of SamTrans bus operators called in sick last month in response to unresolved contract negotiations between the agency and union members.
And since SamTrans loses money, how will they pay for the raises? This is bad business and as I have said before Public employees should never be allowed to strike and they should not be able to political sides by funneling money and paying off democrats. By doing this the unions are using my money against me or anyone who is on the other side of an issue.
