Police in Redwood City on Wednesday arrested a man suspected of punching random people throughout the area, the department said.
On Wednesday morning at about 7:39 a.m., officers responded to the 1800 block of Broadway on a report from a 78-year-old man who said he was sitting in his car in the Grocery Outlet parking lot when an unknown man came up to him and punched him several times in the face and then walked away. The victim gave a description of his attacker, but officers were unable to locate any suspect.
Then just after 8 a.m., another call came in about a suspect punching a random community member outside the Hall of Justice at 400 County Center. Investigators believed this was the same person that punched the man in the car earlier.
Redwood City Police officers obtained video surveillance from each assault and confirmed the same individual perpetrated each event.
At about 5:21 p.m., police learned that the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office was investigating a similar battery that had just occurred on the 2500 Block of Middlefield Road in North Fair Oaks.
Deputies responded to the area and apprehended Redwood City resident Miguel Angel Landa, 37, on the 2600 block of Middlefield Road.
According to the Sheriff's Office, two victims were female employees of the county of San Mateo who were nearby their places of work.
Landa was arrested by Redwood City police and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of willful injury to an elder, battery and violating his parole for a former felony assault.
