Gunfire erupted on the streets of San Carlos yesterday as a wholesale jeweler was carjacked in broad daylight.
The shots came not fom the carjackers, but from the jeweler who fired his own gun at the suspects fleeing in his car with a trunk full of jewels.
At approximately 3:27 p.m. yesterday, San Carlos police received numerous 911 calls for shots fired in the 900 block of Laurel Street downtown.
One suspect fled in the jewelers car, which was later recovered in the 1000 block of Walnut Street. A dark gray Aerostar van also fled the area with a man and a woman inside.
There were three suspects involved. They were described as two Hispanic men in their 20s and one Hispanic woman.
The investigation is continuing and police will not say if the jewels were recovered.
A similar incident took place in June on the 600 block of Laurel Street. In that incident, a jewelry salesman took a quick trip to the bank and reported the theft of $150,000 worth of precious stones missing from his car. Police do not believe the two incidents are related. <
