San Francisco officials celebrated Monday the preservation and relocation of a 700-pound, fiberglass, grinning dachshund, an iconic emblem for a chain of 30 defunct San Francisco diners founded in 1949.
The San Francisco Department of Public Works and community groups teamed up to save the dog when the restaurant it symbolized, the Ocean Beach Doggie Diner on Sloat Boulevard, went under in 1986.
Some 14 years later, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to have the public works department restore and relocate the doggie diner head to the median of Sloat Boulevard and 45th Street.
But before the doggie head was moved, it was forced to undergo another test of its endurance: 45 mph winds that knocked it over onto Sloat Boulevard.
Once again, the community came to the doggie head's rescue and was able to repair and relocate it.
Monday, the Department of Public Works, San Francisco Supervisors Fiona Ma and Sean Elsbernd, community leaders and neighborhood school children planned to gather around the doggie diner head to celebrate its restoration.
