Come rain or shine, Belmont officials will gather Thursday to celebrate the groundbreaking of the city's long-awaited new library.
The library is being paid for by a $8.5 million voter approved bond measures and private donations, including a $300,000 donation from Oracle Corporation.
Plans to build the library have been under way for years and the bond measure was passed in 2001. In September, crews began demolition the old 5,000-square-foot library at 1110 Alameda de las Pulgas to make room for the new, state-of-the-art 20,000-square-foot building.
Shaped like an 'L,' the building will wrap around a grove of heritage oak trees. Inside, visitors will be able to enjoy food and beverages at a cafe, self-service check-outs and eventually an automatic book return system.
The library is being designed by San Francisco-based Field Paoli architect firm and construction bids were awarded to Gonsalves and Stronck. Field Paoli also designed the Millbrae library, which opened in November.
The Belmont library is scheduled to open in spring 2006.
Tomorrow's groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public. It will be held 3:30 p.m. at 1110 Alameda de las Pulgas.
