Burlingame High School teachers voted on Wednesday to approve a seven-period school day starting in the fall.
Union leaders said 81 percent of the school's 67 teachers voted in its favor, and some said it was the only way to give students the chance to take electives with a stronger academic core mandated by the San Mateo Union High School District.
Sports team membership for freshmen will not take the place of a physical education requirement next year, so their schedules might still be tight, said Kevin Nelson, a teacher at Burlingame High School.
Aragon High School has also sent a seven-period day plan the teacher's association legislative council, and Mills is looking at one, Nelson said.
San Mateo High School will continue with six periods next year, but it is likely all six major schools in the district will be on the same seven-period bell schedule by the 2005/2006 school year.
