After almost seven years as a councilman, Jerry Deal has decided to move on from Burlingame and will step down from his role Sept. 21.
Deal announced Wednesday he will be selling his home in Burlingame and purchasing a new place in Oregon with his wife JoAnn. With this move, he is leaving the council position he assumed in 2007 after 13 years on the Planning Commission where he served as chair for three years.
“An opportunity came along to purchase a property and I can’t do all the things I need to do,” he said. “I’m leaving a lot of things that I really cherish — I put my heart into it.”
He was re-elected to the City Council in November 2011 and has served as mayor one time. Deal is a member of the City’s Economic Development Subcommittee and the liaison to the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce. He is also a participant on a number of regional boards, including the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans), the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain, vice chair), the Transbay Joint Powers Authority, the Peninsula Congestion Relief Alliance and the San Mateo County Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Services Group Joint Powers Authority.
Deal, who runs the design firm J Deal Associates, has called Burlingame home for more than 35 years. He will keep this Burlingame office and a home he has in San Francisco. He said he loved many things about being on the council.
“It’s working with people about trying to make things better,” he said. “I do enjoy listening to people and coming up with solutions.”
Moving forward, Deal joked that he’d like the city to erect a statue in his honor.

Meanwhile, Mayor Michael Brownrigg said the council is disappointed to see Deal go.
“We regret that councilmember Deal has decided to step down from the council, but I have worked with Jerry long enough to know that when his mind is made up, that is that,” he said. “We will miss his humor and common sense on council. We all deeply appreciate the many years of service Jerry and JoAnn have given to our community on council, on the Planning Commission and in our great schools. We wish them well in their new adventures.”
Deal received architectural training from the University of California at Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design. Deal has five children and 10 grandchildren.
In 2005, the Burlingame City Council established procedures for appointment to vacancies in the office of city councilmember. The procedures allow the City Council to either call for a special election or fill the position by appointment after an application and interview process. Deal’s seat will be up in November 2015. The City Council will discuss these procedures at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Aug. 18.
