A Belmont police officer was arrested April 21 on suspicion of rape, Redwood City police Capt. Ashley Osborne confirmed.
The officer, Filipe Gomes, 35, is a resident of Redwood City and was booked into the San Mateo County Jail, where he subsequently posted a $100,000 bail, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The incident is alleged to have occurred when Gomes was off duty and “is not related to his occupation as a police officer,” Osborne said in an email.
The information presented does not lead the police department to believe there is any danger to the general public, Osborne said.
When a police officer is charged with a crime, it’s typical that individual would be placed on administrative leave, Wagstaffe said, although he could not yet provide any information on the facts of the case.
If and when a case is sent to the DA’s Office, it will be reviewed in the coming weeks. Gomes’ next appearance date is set for May 21, Wagstaffe said.
