Sundance Film Festival reveals details about Robert Redford tributes and legacy screenings

The Sundance Film Festival plans to honor Robert Redford’s legacy in 2026. Redford, who died in September at 89, founded the institute over 40 years ago. This January, the festival will feature a screening of his first independent film, “Downhill Racer,” along with restored Sundance classics like “Little Miss Sunshine” and “House Party.” Festival director Eugene Hernandez says many artists want to participate and that more details will be revealed soon. The 2026 festival will be the last in Park City, Utah, before moving to Boulder, Colorado, in 2027. Tickets go on sale Wednesday.

Adam Driver on Jarmusch, 'Star Wars' and putting filmmakers first

NEW YORK (AP) — In an interview with The Associated Press, Adam Driver says he developed a Kylo Ren “Star Wars” movie that would have been directed by Steven Soderbergh. They spent two years developing and scripting “The Hunt for Ben Solo.” Ultimately, Walt Disney Co. executives nixed it. Driver says the script was one of the best he's ever read. It would have taken place following the events of 2019's “The Rise of Skywalker.” Representatives for Disney declined to comment. The studio has multiple other “Star Wars” projects in the works.

Paris prosecutor says stolen Louvre jewels worth an estimated $102 million

PARIS (AP) — The Paris prosecutor says that crown jewels stolen in a Louvre heist were worth an estimated 88 million euros ($102 million), but that the monetary estimate doesn’t include their historical value to France. Prosecutor Laure Beccuau, whose office is leading the investigation, said about 100 investigators are now involved in the police hunt for the suspects and gems after Sunday’s theft. She said in an interview with broadcaster RTL that the “wrongdoers who took these gems won’t earn 88 million euros if they had the very bad idea of disassembling these jewels."  She says authorities hope the culprits "won’t destroy these jewels without rhyme or reason.″

M. Night Shyamalan's latest plot twist? Teaming with Nicholas Sparks on a novel and upcoming film

M. Night Shyamalan, known for dark films like “The Sixth Sense,” has teamed up with Nicholas Sparks for a new project. After finishing three intense movies, Shyamalan wanted a change. He found it in “Remain,” a supernatural romance he co-authored with Sparks. The collaboration is unique because Shyamalan wrote the screenplay first, and Sparks adapted it into a novel. A film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor has already wrapped production. Sparks and Shyamalan previously crossed paths years ago when Shyamalan was considered to adapt Sparks' “The Notebook.” The job went to someone else, but Shyamalan says Sparks’ work “always represented something magical to me.”

It wasn’t until White began preparing to play the rock 'n' roll legend for “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” that he even tried. There’s an established playbook for music biopics. “Deliver Me From Nowhere” ignored all of it. The film, written and directed by Scott Cooper, eschews the standard life-spanning, play-the-hits approach and instead focuses on a small portion of Springsteen’s sprawling life: the making of his 1982 album, “Nebraska.” It's the first movie based on Springsteen's life. And it marks the first lead movie role for White, the Emmy-winning star of “The Bear.”

Memoir by Prince Andrew's accuser reignites a scandal that has long dogged UK royals

LONDON (AP) — The British royal family is under intense scrutiny as Virginia Giuffre's memoir hits bookstores. Giuffre, an accuser of Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein, died by suicide in April. Her book, "Nobody’s Girl," doesn't reveal new details but reignites accusations against Andrew. He recently announced he will stop using his titles, including Duke of York, but denies Giuffre’s claims. Giuffre alleges she was forced to have sex with Andrew on three occasions when she was underage. Andrew settled a lawsuit with her in 2022 without admitting wrongdoing. Buckingham Palace faces pressure to strip Andrew of his titles.

In her review for The Associated Press, film writer Lindsey Bahr writes that the film is “deliriously fun, intelligent and impassioned,” adding that prior Ibsen knowledge isn't necessary for enjoyment. “Hedda,” rated R and in theaters Friday, is a film that works entirely on its own terms.

NEW YORK (AP) — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro's memoir is coming out in January. It touches on his political rise and the trauma of his home being set on fire. HarperCollins announced Tuesday that "Where We Keep the Light: Stories From a Life of Service" will be released Jan. 27. Shapiro was elected governor in 2022 and has become a prominent national Democrat. He was on Kamala Harris' shortlist as a running mate in last year's presidential election. A man set fire to his official residence in April. The family was safely evacuated, and the man pleaded guilty and was sentenced last week.

Disney+ and Hulu cancellations rose after ABC briefly pulled 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

NEW YORK (AP) — Disney+ and Hulu subscription cancellations rose during the month that ABC briefly cancelled “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” according to data from subscription analytics company Antenna. ABC pulled the show off the air for less than a week in September in the wake of criticism over his comments related the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Antenna estimates total cancellations in September were 4.1 million for Hulu and 3 million for Disney+. The “churn rate,” or the percentage of customers that cancel their subscriptions in a specific month, jumped from 5% in August to 10% in September for Hulu. That figure jumped 4% in August to 8% in September for Disney+.
