Go to any high school sports event and chances are the sound system will be blasting the latest hip-hop song. From 50 Cent to Black Eye Peas, parents sitting in the stands must be horrified listening to what passes as "music" these days.
The fact that most of the Sports Lounge's job is hanging around high school kids, it keeps the Lounge young at heart. The Lounge is hip to what the kids are listening to these days (wow, that sounds like parents in a comic strip). Heck, the Lounge listens to the same radio stations as these kids.
But the advantage of being, ahem, older, the Lounge has a true appreciation of a wide range of music. So when the Hillsdale volleyball team fired up the speakers for music during warmups before its match with Woodside, the Lounge was surprised what it heard. Lynrd Skynrd's "Sweet Home Alabama," Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," AC/DC's "Highway to Hell."
The Lounge would bet that none of the players were born when these songs were originally released. Add in "Louie, Louie," "Gimme Some Love" and "Born to be Wild" and you get songs that were released before the Lounge was born.
But you know what? The Lounge is just as familiar with those songs as anything released by Too Short or Chingy. And that's the best thing about getting older, you can get your groove on in the past or present.

The Lounge would like to apologize to Burlingame football coach John Philipopoulos. During our post-game interview following the Panthers' 34-20 win M-A, the Lounge paused, stuck a headphone up its ear to hear that the Dodgers' Steve Finley had hit a ninth-inning grand slam to essentially end the Giants' season.

See, the Lounge was "multi-tasking" Saturday afternoon. Not only was the Lounge doing its thing during the football game, for once the Lounge remembered his headphones and radio to listen to the Giants-Dodgers. The Lounge was thinking for sure the baseball game would be over before the football game. Yet, in the last few minutes of the football game, I was giving baseball play-by-play to Burlingame administration, the Panthers' trainer and water boy, other reporters. Heck, even the side judge was coming to the Lounge between plays on the field to get the latest baseball update.
As the Lounge informed Philipopoulos the Giants had lost, Coach P came back with, "Well, at least the Panthers won."

One of the best teams no one knows about is the Crystal Springs Upland girls' volleyball team. Off to a 12-2 start, the Gryphons won the Lick-Wilmerding tournament over the weekend, beating Washington-San Francisco in three games.
The only losses the Gryphons have suffered came against Valley Christian-Dublin and to Linden in the Carmichael Invitational tournament. In its 12 wins, Crystal Springs Upland has dropped only seven games.
