It has been pretty well established that the Sacred Heart Prep water polo program, especially the boys’ team, is one of the elite programs in the nation.
But sometimes it’s easy to forget how dominant the SHP boys’ team really is. You get a just a taste of how strong the Gators are as they captured their 14th straight West Catholic Athletic League tournament title Saturday.
But taking a deeper dive into the Gators’ boys’ program shows success over the last 10 years that rivals that of the De La Salle’s all-time football winning streak. If not for the niche-sport nature of water polo, the Gators’ run would be better celebrated.
SHP captured its ninth straight undefeated WCAL regular-season crown this season with yet another perfect 7-0 mark. That dominance if further driven home by the fact that the Gators have won 60 straight regular-season WCAL matches. The last time they lost a league match came in the 2015 regular-season finale against Bellarmine.
That loss to the Bells also represents the last time the Gators lost to a team from the Central Coast Section. Since the 2016 season, SHP has an overall record of 187-43 and is 98-0 against CCS teams.
At this point, most of those CCS teams are also WCAL opponents and the top teams from the toughest league in Northern California meet quite often in various tournaments throughout the season. Otherwise, the Gators don’t even both scheduling non-WCAL schools, instead opting to play in the toughest tournaments in nation when the Gators make several annual trips to Southern California.
But the Gators’ dominance extends to Northern California, as well. Over the last 10 seasons, the Gators have lost only 10 games against teams from the northern part of the state, and those teams come from the East Bay.
Just five teams have accounted for those Nor Cal losses: De La Salle (twice), Campolindo-Moraga (four times), San Ramon Valley (twice) and Archie Williams (once).
In addition to the 14 straight WCAL tournament titles, the Gators have also won 15 straight Central Coast Section championships, including seven Open Division titles in a row, and are heavy favorites to add No. 16 this season. Since 2000, SHP has won 19 section crowns.

The SHP girls’ team is no slouch, either. The Lady Gators have also won 14 straight WCAL tournament titles and have won seven straight regular-season titles and nine of the last 10. Their last league loss came against St. Francis during the 2017 season. Since then, SHP has won 42 WCAL games in a row.
Like the boys, the SHP girls have dominated CCS, having won 13 section crowns since 2000. The Lady Gators won 10 straight CCS titles from 2007 to 2016 and have won the last two in a row.
Like the SHP boys, the SHP girls are heavy favorites to win a CCS championship.

And speaking of CCS water polo, the Aragon girls’ team earned their way into the postseason with a 14-7 win over Burlingame in the PAL CCS play-in match.
The Dons, the third-place finisher in the Bay Division, got nine goals from Emily Troy to deny Burlingame, which was the Ocean Division champion.

There is a lot going on this week.
While football’s regular season wraps up this weekend, CCS champions in flag football and volleyball will be crowned Saturday.
Meanwhile, the CCS girls’ golf champions will be determined Tuesday in Monterey.
