Two seeded players knocked off on opening day of PAL tournament
The Peninsula Athletic League individual tournament opened Tuesday with the top four seeded players advancing to Wednesday’s quarterfinals. There were two upsets, however, as Burlingame’s Alexander Bozinovic knocked off No. 5-seed Adi Kudaravalli of Menlo-Atherton 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 in the second round. No. 8-seed Noah Chiang of Burlingame also fell in the second round, 6-4, 6-4 to Mills’ Aiden Hsiao.
Chiang cruised through his first-round match 6-2, 6-2 against Aragon’s Azmir Khan. Kudaravalli had a bye through the first round.
With each of the fist six seeds earning byes, No. 1 Akbar Beg from M-A, and No. 2 Ethan Kaw from Sequoia, each cruised in straight sets. Beg didn’t drop a set, winning 6-0, 6-0 in the second round against M-A’s Cubby Derrough. Kaw won 6-0, 6-1 against Aragon’s Adam Beg.
No. 3 Aaron Zhang of Carlmont, No. 4 Kaden Lam of Burlingame, No. 6 Dylan Chua of San Mateo, and No. 7 Owen Demas of Woodside all advanced to the quarterfinal.
The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds are slated for Wednesday at San Mateo. The championship and third-place matches are at Hillsdale, Thursday at 4 p.m.
Boys’ volleyball
Menlo-Atherton 3, St. Ignatius 0
Menlo-Atherton (25-6), ranked No. 12 in the CCS, made quick work of WCAL opponent St. Ignatius (6-22) in a 25-15, 25-13, 25-22 sweep. Senior Peter Chriss recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 15 assists, while hitting at a .480 clip. M-A recorded 37 kills as a team, with senior Dominic Auer adding seven kills to go with his team-high 10 serve receives. Senior Aiden Gabriel was a perfect 18 for 18 on serve receives. Sophomore setter Coen Chou had a team-high 22 assists.
With the win, the Bears have reached the 25-win mark for two straight seasons. The program record is 29 overall wins, set in 2018. M-A has two more regular-season games, with as many as seven potential postseason games available in the CCS and CIF single-elimination tournaments.
Summit Shasta 3, KIPP Esperanza 0
Senior setter Matthew Ng recorded 18 assists and four service aces to lead the Black Bears (13-10) to a 25-7, 25-20, 25-23 sweep at home over KIPP Esperanza-Palo Alto (1-10). Seniors Brandon Cheng and Miles Jeter led Shasta’s attack with six kills apiece, while senior Tau Lehauli Jr. added five.
Woodside 3, Capuchino 0
The Wildcats (3-4 PAL Ocean) cruised to a 25-21, 25-11, 25-14 sweep on their home court over Capuchino (0-7, 1-9). Finn Creighton led the way with a dazzling 23 kills while connecting for a .714 hitting percentage.

Serra (18-13) dropped its fourth straight 25-13, 17-25, 25-15, 25-16 at home to Bellarmine (20-14).
San Mateo (6-4 PAL Bay, 16-11 overall) won 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18 at Mills (2-10, 2-15).
Westmoor (5-8) was swept 25-22, 25-18, 25-15 at home by Riordan-SF (6-11).
Nueva School (7-10) fell in five sets 25-12, 18-25, 28-26, 23-25, 15-12 at Mountain View Academy (6-4).

Burlingame 9, Carlmont 3
The Panthers (6-2 PAL Bay, 10-3 overall) jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter and, after a scoreless second quarter for both teams, took the win in hand in the second half at home against Carlmont (1-6, 5-6). It marks the third straight win for Burlingame. Anders Cauthier, Miles Reeth and Rowan Maher scored two goals apiece for the Panthers.
Serra 13, Menlo School 5
Serra (4-2 WCAL, 12-4 overall) rallied for the win at Menlo School (1-5, 4-10). With two regular-season games to play, the Padres remain in fourth place at the top of a cluster in the WCAL standings, with St. Ignatius and St. Ignatius tied for first place with 5-0 league records, and Sacred Heart Prep in second at 4-1.
Menlo-Atherton 18, Hillsdale 0
Menlo-Atherton (7-0 PAL Bay, 10-2 overall) earned its first shutout of the year at Hillsdale (1-7, 6-9) to clinch no less than a co-championship in the PAL Bay Division. It marks a three-peat for the Bears, who have now won 30 straight going back to 2022.

Woodside (2-6 PAL Ocean, 3-10 overall) snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory at Aragon (0-8, 0-9).
Badminton
Aragon 27, Menlo-Atherton 3
The Dons (13-0 PAL Bay) wrapped up no worse than a co-championship in the PAL Bay Division with a big win at home over Menlo-Atherton. Aragon swept through No. 1s play, with No. 1 boys’ single William Ye winning 21-5, 21-8, and No. 1 girls’ single Perlina Tse winning 21-15, 18-21, 21-16 over Yimeng Cai. Aragon’s No. 1 boys’ doubles teams Paul Yu and Howell Zhag, and No. 1 girls’ doubles Chin-Ray Kong and Melody Liu both swept. No. 1 mixed doubles Takeo Blakely and Katy Yu rallied back to beat Addison Youngblood and Weycene Yang 16-21, 21-19, 22-20.
The stage in now set for Aragon’s regular-season finale Thursday at home against Carlmont, with the second-place Scots one game behind the Dons in the Bay Division standings. Aragon can wrap up the Bay Division title with a win. A Carlmont victory would mean the two teams share the league title.
Carlmont 21, South San Francisco 9
Carlmont’s No. 1 girls’ single Grace Liu led the way with a 21-15, 21-8 victory as the Scots took care of business at home against South City. The second-place Scots (12-1 PAL Bay) remain one game behind first-place Aragon in the PAL Bay Division standings with one regular-season game to play. The two frontrunners meet Thursday at Aragon.
Carlmont’s No. 1 boys’ doubles Bryant Hu and Morgan Li swept 21-5, 22-20, and No. 1 girls’ doubles Prim Mekathikom and Euna Min won 21-12, 21-17. South City earned wins at No. 1 boys’ singles, with Benson Ngai holding off Ian Shi 22-20, 14-21, 21-12; and No. 1 mixed doubles Adrian Arnaud and Renee Chu sweeping 23-21, 21-11.
