Menlo-Atherton 14, Hillsdale 12
Leading by four at halftime, the Bears held off a second-half challenge from the Knights in the PAL Bay Division opener, as both expect to be in the mix for a division title.
M-A (1-o PAL Bay, 3-3 overall) led 4-3 after the first period and 9-5 at halftime. Both teams scored three, third-period goals before Hillsdale (0-1, 3-2) outscored the Bears 4-2 in the fourth to fall just short.
Evan ten Vaanholt led the Bears offensively, finishing with a half-dozen goals and added three assists. Bears goalie Michael Poirier was busy, finishing with 17 saves.
Hillsdale got five goals each from Isaiah Yeager and Taner Heidenreich, while goalie Ari Zimmerman finished with 10 saves and two assists.
Sequoia 15, Woodside 9
In an other opening-day showdown, the Ravens got a leg up on the Wildcats in the Bay Division standings.
AJ McDonald, a junior and the reigning San Mateo Daily Journal Player of the Year, led Sequoia (1-0 PAL Bay, 6-2 overall) with six goals. Matteo Chocano and Brandon Ackeralt each added a hat trick for the Ravens.
Woodside falls to 0-1 in Bay play and 0-2 overall.

Carlmont (1-0 PAL Bay) got past Priory (0-1) in two mandatory overtime periods, 11-9.
Aragon (1-0 PAL Ocean) beat Terra Nova (0-1), 11-4.

Menlo-Atherton (1-0 PAL Bay, 2-3 overall) opened Bay Division play with a 13-9 win over Aragon (0-1, 3-2).
Woodside beat Sequoia, 11-4.

Menlo School 28, Atwater 26
The Knights rallied from a 26-14 third-quarter deficit to beat the visiting Falcons in a non-league game in Atherton.
Down at halftime 19-14 and 26-14 in the third quarter, Menlo quarterback Ava Allen connected with Sophie Housser and got the conversion to close to 26-21. Allen, who threw three touchdown passes, then gave the Knights the lead with a rushing touchdown, with Housser picking up the conversion for the two-point lead.
Kaelee Wang and Marin Yamada each pulled down a scoring pass for Menlo.
Maren Mulloy then iced the game with an interception with 45 seconds to play.
San Mateo 35, Terra Nova 0
The Bearcats rebounded from a disappointing shutout loss to Capuchino last week by drilling the Tigers.
The Lichaa twins, quarterback Kayla and receiver Zoe, were a lethal connection for San Mateo (1-1 PAL Bay, 3-2 overall). Kayla Lichaa completed 13 of 20 passes for 136 yards and four touchdowns. Zoe Lichaa caught five balls for 67 yards and three scores, with Valentina Gomez Palacio catching the other scoring strike. She also rushed for 42 yards and a second touchdown.
Kayla Lichaa led the Bearcats in rushing with 84 yards on 10 carries.
Ruby Peraza-Vazquez and Michelle Vallejo Banuelos each had an interception for San Mateo.

Menlo-Atherton 39, Half Moon Bay 0
The Bears blasted the Cougars, with the M-A defense picking off five passes and quarterback Mae Kunihiro accounting for three touchdowns.
Half Moon Bay, who is playing its first season, had its longest play from scrimmage this season, with quarterback Kiersten Holmes connecting with Zoey Lemoge for a 51-yard completion.
Mills 32, South City 0
The Vikings had little trouble with the Warriors in staying unbeaten in PAL play.
Alexis Ivankov, Alyssa Peñas and Lucy Esquivel each scored a touchdown for Mills (2-0).
South City falls to 1-1.

Hillsdale beat Woodside (1-2), 7-6. Sophia Dellis scored Woodside’s touchdown on a pick-6 interception return.
Carlmont (1-1) beat Capuchino (1-1), 28-6.
El Camino (2-2) got past Sequoia (1-4), 18-6.

Hillsdale 257, Menlo-Atherton 267
Kayla Corcoran led the Knights to their second straight win, beating the Bears at Peninsula Golf & Country Club in San Mateo.
Corcoran, a sophomore, shot a 2-under 35 for low-round of the day honors. M-A (0-3) was led by Savannah Lee, a freshman, who shot a 45. They were the only two golfer to shoot sub-50 rounds on the difficult course.
Aragon 238, San Mateo 273
The Dons stayed undefeated in Bay Division matches, topping the Bearcats at Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo.
Four of the five scoring golfers for Aragon (3-0 PAL Bay) shot sub-50 rounds, led by senior Kate Chong and junior Ariel Ogawa, who both finished with rounds of 45. Autumn Ogawa, also a junior, came in with a 47 and Vittoria Ferrero carded a 48.
San Mateo falls to 1-4 in Bay Division matches.
El Camino 230, Capuchino 277
The Colts cruised to the Ocean Division win at Fleming Golf Course at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
Saoirse Price continues her strong senior season, leading all players with a 38. Ellie Dela Cruz finished with a 44 for the El Camino (2-2 PAL Ocean), while Alyssa Rueda and Juliet Fong came with scores of 46 and 48, respectively.
Capuchino (0-2) was led by Karen Rogers, who carded a 47.
Girls’ tennis
Hillsdale 6, Westmoor 1
The Knights cruised to a second straight Ocean Division win over the Rams.
Hillsdale (2-0 PAL Ocean, 4-1 overall) swept the four singles matches, with Isabella Edera, Lia Svidler and Elise Heneghan, playing at No. 2 through 4 singles, all winning their matches, 6-0, 6-0.
The Knights’s No. 2 doubles team of Kalea Kim and Rebecca Mao winning their match at love, as well.
The match of the day came at No. 1 doubles, where Westmoor’s Kristen De La Cruz and Jaydn Lavado beat Eden Jacobson and Liana Macomber, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8.
Westmoor falls to 1-2 in Ocean play.
