The Lady Knights (10-1 overall) repeated as champions of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, paced by a big performance junior Maeia Makoni. Menlo’s star forward produced a double-double with 17 points and 19 rebounds, including three 3-pointers. Menlo enjoyed one of its most productive quarters of the season, outscoring Lynbrook 27-7 in the second quarter. Only the Knights’ 29-8 fourth quarter in the season opener against Urban was better. Freshman center Sharon Nejad totaled 13 points in Saturday’s tourney championship, and sophomore Danielle McNair added 10.
Boys’ basketball
Menlo 43, Foothill 24
The Knights (6-2 overall) opened the game on a 21-0 run to cruise to fifth place in the Orange Holiday Classic. Menlo shut out Foothill in the first quarter, with Cole Kastner scoring eight of his game-high 18 points in the opening eight minutes. Junior forward Justin Sellers added 11 points. Kastner, a junior forward, was named to the all-tournament team as Menlo posted a 3-1 record, including wins over Hawaii Baptist and Jordan-Long Beach.

Skyline 67, Cerritos 60
After falling in the semifinals to host Fullerton Friday night, the Skyline women’s basketball team (10-5 overall) bounced back behind a pair of double-double performances to hold off Cerritos in the finale of the Fullerton College Tournament. Kasili Fononga, a 5-9 freshman forward out of Aragon, shared the team-high of 14 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Olga Faasolo, a freshman center out of Notre Dame-Belmont, added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while adding three steals.
The win finishes off a stellar December during which the Lady Trojans posted a 7-2 record. In earning its 10th win of the season, Skyline matches its pace from the 2015-16 season in getting win No. 10 on Dec. 29.

Girls’ basketball
Sutter 61, Half Moon Bay 50
Freshman guard Abby Kennedy scored 20 points but this was not enough as the Lady Cougars fell in the semifinals of the Casa Robles Tournament. Free-throw efficiency proved to be the difference as Sutter converted 19 of 32 from the stripe while Half Moon Bay was 7 of 16. HMB senior Mailie Bowers added 10 points. The Cougars played closer Saturday in the tournament finale, falling to Cordova-Rancho Cordova 41-34.
