Two San Mateo police officers received separate honors for their work in the community.
Downtown police Officer Robert Anderson, a 29-year veteran, received the Tony Hoffman Community Mental Health Service Award May 7 from the San Mateo County Mental Health Board. The award is usually granted to those who improve the lives of people living with mental illness. As the downtown officer, he was instrumental in developing the Homeless Outreach Team and helping that population find stable housing.
Officer Keala Keanaaina, or Officer K, is a five-year veteran assigned as the School Resource Officer at San Mateo High School and is known for his connection to both students and the Polynesian community. He is also heavily involved in the Police Activities League and established a rugby team as an alternative to gangs.
On May 4, he received the Jefferson Award, a prestigious local and national award for exceptional community and public service.

The Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance, in conjunction with the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, named San Carlos resident Margaret Pye San Mateo County Bicycle Commuter of the Year.
"About five years ago, we made the decision to sell our car. Since November of 2007, I’ve traveled over 7,000 miles and lost 30 pounds. I enjoy incorporating the bicycle in my daily routine, and encourage everyone to do the same,” Pye said.
Bike to Work Day is today. So put the paper in your shoulder bag and get rolling.

Leave it to the Peninsula Humane Society to pull out all the stops to help its animals awaiting adoption. Through the end of May, PHS is waiving the adoption fee for black cats — including predominantly black cats. PHS has 18 available and more than 40, total, in the shelter (some are waiting for space in its adoption areas). Shelters across the country say that black cats spend more time awaiting adoption than any other cats. Superstition is one reason. Also, black cats are much more difficult to photograph; their features don’t stand out in photos, which means website visitors often fly by their profiles.
